ahah, i had pretty much the exact same experience with the doorbell. i have not been back since, and that was almost a year ago. as you say, though, they appear to be doing fine without me, so hooray for them. i like the 36th ave store better anyway. unlike Peter's (and most stores around here) i can browse around at 36th Ave without being harassed, i mean "helped" by the employees who seem to assume i have no idea where i am or what i am doing there.

so rude it was weird
i tried this place after it opened. at first there were always girls working there who appeared to be 8 or 9 years old. is that even legal? the last time i went the person behind the counter was so rude it was weird. middle of the day, broad daylight, the person refused to unlock the door and let me in unless i rang the doorbell. we made direct eye contact as i stood outside, i assuming this person might open the door after seeing me standing there. after several confusing seconds the person let me in, and then lectured me on how this peter wine and liquor store requires its customers to ring the bell. "we have a bell" and "you must ring the bell" and i was wtf is this? i can accept that there could be cultural differences here but in my land it was so rude as to be weird. i have not been back since then but they appear to be doing well so good for them. i hope their customers have all learend to ring the bell
