Bohemian had some good music this night, on my first visit to the place in about a year. Usually I go to this place with a large group or a party, but on this day I met up with a friend. I was amused to see us described as "2 MEN" on this receipt. There is some bothersome douchery about the Bohemian. A bathroom attendant? Seriously? Bathroom attendants, the few times I have encountered them, have always had the effect of making me not wash my hands at all, so if I am any example then they would seem to create a health and hygiene hazard where none would have existed before. Indeed, my friend elected not to use the bathroom at all when I told him there was an attendant present. The girls walking about selling $2 shots would not have been irksome except that the shots tastied like sugary water. Was there even any alcohol therein? I don't know. It's all good, though. I love this place, just not on weekends. Bohemian stands above a certain other beer garden in the area for its decision not to use the identity theft machine I saw in use the last time I visited the vaguely-aforementioned other place. Use of that machine alone was reason enough for me to stay away, and I am glad to see that the Bohemian chose not to use that vulnerable and ill-advised technique of cataloging its customers. Since grade school frozen yogurt has, to me, looked, tasted, and felt like an air-filled fraud. Another thing I can not understand is sidewalk seating. This weird pretense of pretending to be Paris or Copenhagen is a mystifying fetish of New York life that simply baffles me. I do not have a problem with outdoor seating per se. But I fail to get turning public sidewalk space into a dining room. Who wants to sit by the curb with their $30 pasta bowl, inhaling bus fumes and truck exhaust right up in the butthole of city life? Not I! So if it seems odd that I would check in to a place like Twirlz -- a new frozen yogurt café with conspicuously abundant sidewalk seating from which one's lungs can absorb acidic detritus from the relentless army of exhaust-spewing vehicles heading to and from the nearby RFK/Triborough Bridge and/or Grand Central Parkway -- then that is because it is odd and is unlikely to happen again. I have no ill will toward the place or anyone involved with it, but I do not like frozen yogurt and I do not like the sidewalk dining room preposteration and so I think Twirlz will do fine without me. Richard & Son 35-18 Steinway Street Astoria NY 11102 (718) 433-1000 Summary:   Keywords:   Description: I allegedly qualified for a $35 rebate on this Friedrich A/C, but on account of being mysteriously disqualified for a Verizon Wireless Rebate I decided not to waste my energies on this one, which would likely prove another waste of time at the faceless, nameless hands of the Rebate Police. Verizon Wireless and P.C. Richard may be unrelated companies but the rebate dance is the same no matter where you go, and when Verizon won the $100 I thought I had coming from the above-mentioned rebate I just said fuck it, fuck the rebate time vampire, no more rebates, my time is more valuable than that heart-attack-on-a-receipt. When a sales rep tells me about a rebate I just let him/her speak their piece and then I move on. Rebates are a scam. The only rebates for which I seem to qualify are those for which the value of the rebate is less then the postage required to mail it in. OK, then. New air conditioner. Friedrich! The old A/C was hauled away after 11 years of trusted cooling services. That old unit had no dials (they fell off) and to turn it on I had to plug it in to the wall. When the dials started falling off I returned to P.C. Richard to see if they could sell me replacement parts, but the clerks I talked to just laughed. "no, we don't do dials." The old A/C groaned a lot, too, especially when it was not very hot outside. I got used to its character flaws, and was sad to see it go. I was happy to find that P.C. Richard's deliivery and installation guys took the old A/C away for recycling. I was not looking forward to doing that myself. June 3, 2010 A month with the new A/C and I can't say I love it, can't say I hate it. It's just what it is. Gone are the days when I embraced new gadgets and appliances. After 15 or so years at the mercy of the software industry I allow new technologies into my life with skepticism and cynical resignation, and I do not expect that to change. Ever. Owner: sorabji
